Ready for Those Dog Days of Summer?

Tue ,20/07/2010

They’re your best friend, confidant and an adopted member of your family- so why not plan an excursion for them, too? As the weather warms and you’re itching to immerse yourself in nature, consider letting your next trip “go to the dogs” by scheduling an adventure with your partner in crime!

There are many fun and safe ways to enjoy nature with your pal. Below are 10 packing tips for a doggie day out.

  1. Gather lists of rest stops and veterinary hospitals along your trip (if driving)
  2. Leashes are always a must
  3. Bring along a collapsible water bowl for day long treks. We like the Ruffwear Quencher bowl
  4. Stock up on their favorite dog food
  5. Treats are a good way to reward their companionship
  6. One or two toys for play-stops along the way brighten their day
  7. Blankets and/or a dog bed are needed for comfortable sleeping quarters. Check out the Ruffwear Flophouse Foam Pad
  8. Bags to pick up waste
  9. First Aid Kit
  10. Your dog’s medical records, including vaccine history, and medications

So now that you’ve got your packing list ready to go, keep an eye out for a Puppy Pack Fitting or Barkin Backyards seminar at Backwoods to learn expert tips on how to get your best friend all suited up for the memories that lie ahead! For an ideal doggie bag, consider the Ruffwear Approach Pack.

Before you know it, you’re off to enjoy the new sights, sounds, and scents of your destination with your thrill-seeking, four-legged pal. Just don’t forget to post your story and pictures on our You Had to be There  site to share your bonding “tails!”

A Cowboy in Africa:Norman Customer Bill Dragoo makes BMW’s GS Trophy Team

Mon ,05/07/2010

I was a Boy Scout, Troop 285. One of two Eagle Scouts in our small group of youngsters, I learned to love camping. I also love to ride. I should have been a cowboy, but my granddad sold my horse before that thought ever got the bit in its teeth. So, I bought a motorcycle instead. I never chased cattle, but I rode the range…still do, every chance I get. My bedroll consists of a North Face Blue Kazoo sleeping bag and a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 tent. My steed is a BMW R1200GS Adventure. Motel Six might as well save a few kilowatts and turn out the light. I’ll be somewhere under the stars, thank you.

The Rawhyde Adventure Ranch, deep in the heart of the Angeles National Forest north of Castaic, California, has become BMW’s west coast training center and host to the 2010 GS Trophy qualifier, “The Adventure Rider’s Challenge.” The event was held there at the end of April and first of May. I rode out with Adventure Rider Magazine’s publisher, James Pratt, primitive camping in some of the west’s magnificently remote but motor-accessible places.

Many times we find ourselves bound by urgency, flying down the highway, bent on making it to our destination in time to have a well planned bit of fun and then return home to the lawn, jobs and other obligations, a predictable experience when we attempt to schedule every moment. Not this time. Adventure, I have heard it said, is what happens when plans go awry. Sans any plans then, it’s all an adventure, right? Our only obligation was to make it to the Rawhyde Ranch in time to compete, six days travel away. Plenty of time to ride a motorcycle less than 2,000 miles. We barely made it with all our wanderings!

We burned the six days out to California and I continued my rambling, rolling explorations another three weeks and 5,000 miles after the competition before returning home. I will attempt to share more of that story later, but suffice it to say that we were successful at the Challenge and I will be representing the United States in the GS Trophy competition in Africa this November. As I prepare for the event, I am grateful to have a Backwoods store in my hometown of Norman, Oklahoma. It was a “fur piece” to north Oklahoma City back in the dust bowl days before they put in a store a mile from my house! Next week I will load my gear on my bike and head to the Great Northwest to meet my team mates for the trophy and ride the Oregon Back Country Discovery Route (OBDR), and to attend BMW’s National Rally in Redmond, Oregon. The OBDR, a 750-mile, mostly dirt trail from California to Washington, will serve as a training run. We will camp along the way, enjoying the outdoors and learning something about working together as a team.

Learn more about the Adventure Rider’s Challenge and the GS Trophy completion by checking out this link. Dragoo in center of opening slide and on red R1200GS, black and white shirt, gray helmet.

And more about the GS Trophy here:

About Bill Dragoo: Bill Dragoo takes to riding big motorcycles in the rough like a fish takes to water. Bill and his wife, Susan, of Norman, Oklahoma, are writing a book, “Ultimate Dual Sport Rides of North America.” Bill just finished a 7000-mile journey through the western United States, where he went to compete and to meet with contributors. Over the last three years Bill has competed in the Rawhyde Adventure Rider’s Challenge near Los Angeles, California, an amateur skills competition for dual sport motorcycles of 650cc and above. He has scored two first-place podium spots and a second during his three attempts at the ARC. Bill’s first success in 2008 caught the eye of BMW Motorrad of North America and put him in the running for a world class, dream come true event. BMW’s German parent company sponsors “The GS Trophy” every two years. Based on the popular “Camel Trophy” of years past, the GS Trophy showcases the R1200GS and F800GS instead of Land Rovers. Conditions are, otherwise, much the same.

In 2008 the contest was held in Tunisia, North Africa. Bill was one of six finalists, but missed the final cut in competition at BMW’s east coast training facility at Spartanburg, South Carolina. This year his second-place finish on Day One of the Adventure Rider’s Challenge earned him a place among the Top 20, who would compete the second day for one of the top three positions on the GS Trophy team. The 2010 GS Trophy will have teams from 14 countries taking on the terrain of South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique.

Solidarity reinforces dreams within Real Chicks Team

“Solidarity: Mutual agreement and support; harmony of interests and responsibilities among individuals in a group, especially as manifested in unanimous support and collective action for something.”

I began going on the Real Chicks Hike in Omaha about a year and a half ago. I started by thinking it would simply be nice to have other people to enjoy the outdoors with.  I never would have guessed that the Real Chicks would become my best friends and biggest supporters.

You see, even though the Backwoods event is the Real Chicks Hike, hiking has very little to do with being a real chick.  Going on a hike is your ticket into the most empowering community I have ever witnessed.  Whatever your personal dream might be, the Real Chicks are going to give you the confidence and support to make it a reality. snowshoe2

For example, one member has wanted to climb Kilimanjaro all her life. You can find her hitting the local trails with other Real Chicks in preparation for her climb next month. A group of women decided they wanted to do a triathlon.  Did the fact that several of them can’t swim stop them? Heck no!  Swim lessons have commenced and plans are made to race the Omaha triathlon this fall. I am a kayak polo player (think hockey in a kayak) and my goal was to make the US team that would participate in the 2010 Kayak Polo World Championships.  The chicks not only helped me train for try-outs but also encouraged me along the way. Now that I am on the team, they are organizing my fundraising for me!

It is not only in athletic pursuits that the Real Chicks support each other. After being laid off from my job, I happened to meet a woman in my field on a Real Chick Hike.  We exchanged phone numbers and she insisted I give her a call to set up an interview at her office.  I just accepted the job! Solidarity

A key piece in developing the Real Chicks into more than just a hiking group was their participation in the Backwoods Adventures Custom Trip to Colorado. A group of 8 women flew out to the mountains to spend the weekend hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and taking in nature.  It was on this trip that we really got to know each other and became committed to supporting each other. The theme for our trip quickly became “Solidarity.”  It was a commitment that no one would be left behind; if one fell while skiing, we all went down. We insisted on an attitude of “give it a try- it’s okay if you aren’t a pro.”After Colorado we don’t just belong to the Real Chicks, we define ourselves as Real Chicks.

Not a day goes by that I don’t have some sort of communication with this group. As a result of participating in the Real Chicks Hike, I’ve been invited to join in on other hikes, 5K runs, mountain and road bike rides, adventure races, canoe races, and kayak polo games; not to mention endless coffee, lunch, and dinner plans. There is something for everyone.

Thanks to everyone at Backwoods for the opportunity to develop such great friendships. I hope that if you are in Omaha and love the outdoors you will join the Real Chicks on our next hike on June 19th.  anniversary hike

(Backwoods) Adventures in Costa Rica Part 2

Fri ,30/04/2010

Day # 4 in Costa Rica and it feels like I’ve been here much, much longer!! We are having a blast! Yesterday. we were able to decide how we wanted to spend our afternoon…we could either lay by the pool at the hotel or take a day hike down a canyon to the LaFortuna waterfall…well, half of our group decided to lay by the pool and myself, Joe and Jorge decided to hike to the waterfall. The waterfall was beautiful! When we arrived at the bottom, we were able to swim in the pools…it was a bit chilly but very refreshing after the hike down. There were lots of fish swimming in the same pool and the water was crystal clear.

KW_hike

After we finished swimming it was time to hike back out of the canyon…fyi, it was 487 stairs up, out of the canyon – Joe counted. After the hike we came back to the hotel and went to the pool and the swim up bar…very cool! We had about three hours until our next adventure, which we were headed to the Hot Springs. Wow! This place was Cool!!! They had about 14 different pools that varied in temperature, all being heated by the volcano and natural springs. There was one pool where we could sit under a waterfall and get pounded on the back, it was a perfect water massage! After we relaxed in the pools, we had dinner at the same place…a huge buffet, that looked like something you would find in Las Vegas. Today we are headed back south and towards the coast and tonight I will be sleeping with an ocean view.

Wish you were here!!

(Backwoods) Adventures in Costa Rica

Wed ,28/04/2010

We arrived in Costa Rica on Saturday and took a three hour drive north to LaFortuna. The drive up was great, and we passed a massive amount of farms – sugar cane, coffee, pineapple, mangos and lots of vegetable farms.  It was amazing! The farms were built on the side of mountains, so all the work is done by hand….pretty impressive.  It rained our first night and it was nice to sleep to the sound of rain.

CR_farm_casa_terraza_montaje_baja

Day # 2 was adventure filled and action packed to the MAX!!!  We started early with breakfast at the hotel at 6:30am and then headed to Pure Trek Canyoneering for some waterfall rappelling…AWESOME!!! No previous experience was necessary and we rappelled down four waterfalls and one dry canyon…there was a couple of them that we went straight down the middle and the water was very refreshing!!
Waterfall

After the rappelling we went to Aernal Volcano and did some hiking in the rain forest around the base.  We saw some great plants, trees and even some Howler Monkeys.  Jorge, our guide brought a spotting scope, so we were able to look at them up close and personal.  After the forest trek, we headed up to the lava flow from 1992…we climbed on the volcanic rock and were able to see the volcano up close and personal…we were fortunate and heard the volcano rumbling and even saw some volcanic boulders rolling down the side.

We had dinner in town at LaFortuna and it was MOST delicious…I had this fruity pineapple drink and it was great! After dinner we went to check the volcano out at night and we could see the red lava at the top…how cool is that!!! We also saw several red fireballs that came out of the top and rolled down the side…the perfect ending to the perfect day!!

Today we had a bit of a later start and left the hotel at 7:45am and went zipling through the rain forest…we had 11 zip lines and we got some great speeds and some phenomenal views!!  Definitely not an activity for someone that is afraid of heights. I actually got a small “rug burn” when my arm touched the cable…but now I can tell everyone that I got that scar in Costa Rica when I was zip lining through the rain forest…what a great party topic.

Now we are headed to hike to a waterfall and then to the hot springs tonight!!

Pura Vida!

The Recipe for a Great Spring Hike from Rick Haley – BACKWOODS St. Louis

Thu ,22/04/2010

What is the recipe for a Great Spring Hike?

Take 16 highly motivated, adventurous individuals who enjoy the outdoors, one grand Spring morning with beautiful blue skies, sunshine, and mild temps, one challenging trail in Missouri hardwoods filled with lush vegetation, gorgeous Spring wildflowers and blooming trees.   Mix and shake gently (not stirred)…

Hike10-4 034t Hike10-4 003

You guessed it – our BWSTL Matson Hill hike was one to remember.  We covered approximately 3.0 miles (give or take - depending on who’s GPS was the most accurate) as we trekked through thick woods, up and down hills, and across stream beds.  We encountered small waterfalls, saw a few deer tracks, and heard a woodpecker in the distance.  Overall it was another fun-filled BWSTL hike…

Hike10-4 032 Hike10-4 001

Upon completing the hike and returning to the store, we held a drawing for two pair of Salomon shoes.  The winner of ther first pair was Loretta Auld, and coincidently, daughter Jenny was drawn as winner of the second pair.  Congratulations to both!

A BIG Thanks to all who participated and hope you enjoy the attached photos. Join us for our next hike on Saturday, May 1st. Click here for more details about BACKWOODS St. Louis and to see all the photos, check out our Facebook page.

Utah Canyons Backpacking trip review!

Mon ,19/04/2010

When I first visited Grand Gulch in 2007, I was quickly consumed by the mystery and beauty of such an amazing place. It was my first voyage into a canyon setting for an overnight backpacking trip and I knew that this place would be great for a Backwoods Adventures trip. The natural beauty is everywhere – 300 foot varnished sandstone walls, giant cottonwoods, yuccas and prickly pear cactus, a number of songbirds including juncos, canyon wrens, ravens, vireos and more. The canyon is also full of dwellings and wall art from the Anasazi dating back hundreds and hundreds of years and many of the sites and panels remain in great condition.

Canyon_trees Canyon_building

Fast forward to April 2010 and the desire to show others this unique place through a Backwoods Adventures trip is complete! The Backwoods Adventures group that traveled to Grand Gulch in early April included 6 team members and local guide Chris Barber, plus me. We started and finished the trip in Durango, CO with an excellent welcome dinner at Steamworks brewery, one of the local suds making establishments in town on our first night. The following morning we loaded packs and made the 3 hour trip to Utah and the Kane Gulch ranger station to obtain our permits and have a nice lunch at the trailhead before embarking on our 4 day 3 night journey from Kane Gulch, into Grand Gulch and then exiting via Bullet Canyon.

Over the next 4 days we travelled a total of about 23 miles through the canyons. On our first night we decided to camp on a long arm of sandstone above the Stimper Arch about 100 feet off the canyon floor with a great 180 degree view of the canyon laid out before us. Although the journey to the campsite is arduous and includes some bushwhacking the views from above are worth every drop of sweat!

Canyon_tents Canyon_people

The group also spent plenty of time exploring a number of ruins and art panels in the canyon including Turkey Pen, Split Level, Jailhouse, and Perfect Kiva. One of my favorite spots is the Green Mask ruin, which is a short side trip up Sheiks canyon. High on the wall is a very unique Green Mask whose paint pigments have been traced to other dwelling s and art in southern Arizona, hundreds of miles away!

It was great to show the team that a backpacking trip doesn’t mean that you have to eat a freeze dried meal every night. With dinners including pad Thai, cheese tortellini with veggies and red sauce, and tasty cheese quesadillas with rice and beans we kept everyone happy and full of plenty of calories for all of our hiking and exploring.

People_campsite People_canyon

Throughout the trip it was awesome to see the group jelling and really enjoying each other’s company in such a wonderful outdoor setting. I could see that the team members who had not done quite as much backpacking as the others getting stronger and stronger and feeling more and more comfortable in the back country under the weight of their pack. Whether you want to learn more about backpacking and give it a try or, if you’re like me, and just want to explore a new location in the back country, the Backwoods Adventures Utah Canyons Backpacking Trip is a blast. Occurring over a long weekend each April, this trip is sure to be a staple in our trip line-up and could quickly become one of our most popular spots!

You had to be there …

Thu ,15/04/2010

How many times have you returned from a day hike, a night on the town with friends, a weekend camping trip or a long vacation, and when someone asks you how it was, you start with a sigh or a laugh and say, “You had to be there!.” Of course, that quip summarizes the entire experience, but you inevitably launch into a detailed story about your latest adventure. Somehow, recapping our latest trip – whether it’s downtown or on the other side of the world– makes the excitement, relaxation, belly laughs and even the perils come to life, and we get to enjoy that experience all over again.

Well BACKWOODS fans, now’s your chance to relive and most importantly, TELL your favorite story … or four! This year, we are launching, you had to be there, a monthly contest where our BACKWOODS friends and customers can tell their favorite stories. Each month, we will give away a $300 prize for the winning story and a $1,000 grand prize at the end of the year.

So start thinking about your favorite stories and get writing. April’s theme is trail running. Did you find a new trail, a new product or just have a great day out running the trails? Tell us all about it by clicking here. Who knows a $300 prize pack and the joy of reliving that experience may be just a click away. You had to be there

Keep Austin Beautiful – Clean Sweep Project

Mon ,12/04/2010

I feel lucky to have a fantastic job with Backwoods.  Not only do I have the perfect job that combines my degree and my passion for the outdoors, but also I work for a terrific company that encourages and rewards us for giving back to our community through volunteer work.  Volunteering is also another big passion of mine and I enjoy getting involved in my community.

This past weekend, half of the staff at the Backwoods Corporate office volunteered in the Clean Sweep project through Keep Austin Beautiful.

We picked McKinney Falls State Park and joined a handful of other volunteers to pick up litter along the trail to the Lower Falls and around the Falls area as well.  I was even a bit daring and waded barefoot into the water to help remove a massive amount of aluminum cans and plastic bottles that were stuck in the mud.  When our shift was over, we could definitely see that we made a difference on this trail at McKinney Falls State Park.  Many thanks to the crew at Keep Austin Beautiful for organizing events like this and to our CEO for encouraging us to give back to our community.Feel free to send us a note if you want to join us on our next volunteer adventure!

yoga @ backwoodsWe hosted our first yoga at Backwoods session.  Bryce from the Ashtanga Studio on campus corner was our instructor. He said the class was at a lower level than  a beginner class, but I’ve been doing yoga for quite some time and found parts of it to be a challenge.

We had good attendance for our first class - both staff and customers.  One customer said she had stopped by the studio several times to pick up a schedule but had not been to a class and she enjoyed trying the class in a familiar setting and plans to try some of their upcoming sessions.

Our plan is to invite different instructors into the store to lead a class so our customers…and staff too…can experience various yoga instructors and styles.  Many customers have expressed an interest in trying yoga or other activities, but don’t know where to get started.  So, we wanted to help with the first step.
